1 - 2

The central Alentejo Region of Portugal is rarely found high on tourist's itineraries, but for those who break from the normal tourist routes are richly rewarded with beautiful scenery, charming historical towns and the hospitality of the people of the region. Hidden within the rolling olive tree lined hills of the Alentejo are spectacular fortified towns and charming traditional villages and first hand experience of the true Portuguese way of life.

This tour incorporates Lisbon and the central Alentejo region of Portugal and is suited for all ages who are in good health. Small and young children and not recommenced due to the limited number of children orientated activities and the number of coach journeys. The central region of portugal is by far the cheapest of portugal so your euro will stretch much further in the Alentejo than in the big cities or popular beach resorts. The Alentejo can reach temperatures in excess of 35C during the summer months, so is best explored during the spring or autumn months.

This tour route of the Alentejo region of Portugal can be undertaken by the use of a rental car or by coaches travel. Rede Express are the main coach operator and provide an efficient and extensive service between the major towns of the region, for some of the connections they may only be a single coach per day so planning and advanced booking may be required. Coach times are provided for information; timetables and prices may change.

A hire or rental car is recommended for further exploring each of the areas around the base towns as local bus services can be intermittent and very limited. (Car rental guide) Outside of Lisbon the roads are generally empty and easy to navigate. Flights to and from Portugal should be booked flying into Lisbon and at the airport are many car rental companies - Lisbon Airport Guide.
