Tourist Guide to Lisbon Airport

The luggage collection lounge is dated but functional, to mask the failing s of the airport new coffee and newspaper stalls. The arrivals building is busy and chaotic with over priced cafes and money exchanges providing poor rates. There are cash machines in the arrivals which are operated by the major banks, as these machines are in constant use they are loaded with 50E notes which are very unpopular with taxi and bus drivers alike, therefore before you leave the arrivals hall make sure that these high notes have been broken into much smaller change.

Car rentals are to the right when walking out from the arrivals gate and the stairs to the end of the arrivals hall takes passengers to departures. The metro system in Lisbon is undergoing extensive expansion but there are no plans for it to connect to the airport until 2015 and by this time the airport may have been moved to a new location much further from Lisbon.

There are two main routes to reach your hotel or accommodation from the airport, either a taxi or bus (Aerobus). The bus services connects the airport to the central tourist district of Rossio where most hotels are situated. Tickets can be purchased on board the bus at a cost of 3.50 € and journey takes approximately 20 minutes.

The signs painted brightly on the side of the bus states that the service is every 20minutes and runs throughout the night this is not so since cut backs; bus run every 30 minutes and the last bus is at 10:30 passed this time a local bus 479 can be caught but takes much longer and passes through many housing estates. It is recommended to try to plan to catch a flight that arrives before 9:30 so the Aero bus can be caught, passed 10:30 you are at the mercy of the expensive taxi drivers. The exact Aero bus route can be seen in the image.

If traveling by taxi ensure that the meter is switch on, a tired and slightly confused tourist makes for easy pickings for the taxi drivers. Also by catching a taxi you will experience the Portuguese way of driving, I would recommend wearing a seat belt! A new con to make a few extra Euros is for the taxi driver to claim the luggage allowance; there is an addition charge of 1.60E for all luggage but not per piece of luggage.

Departing From Lisbon Airport

The old process of only allowing passengers into the departure hall to drop luggage has be reversed so farewells can be said just before security. With the re-organisation of the departures hall and the introduction of the domestic flight terminal the departures hall is a lot less chaotic than it used to be.  Budget airlines (especially easy jet) keep queues long and slow, if able to check in on line for fast bag drop off

Security is as tight as with all airports though the staff are generally less stern and a smile may be even given. Keep passports and boarding passes handy as they seems to be extra checks than in other countries or it may be the Portuguese inefficient method.

In an earlier version of this page I had stated.
“As the airport is relatively small there are never great distances to walk and personally I find Lisbon easy to depart from.”
This is now so far from the truth and have nearly missed my flight twice due to the long walk from duty free to the boarding gates, I make the point again it is a very long walk down very bland corridors and can take upwards of 15 minutes!
