This Cruise Ship Tour of Lisbon has been designed to maximise the attractions and sights seen a relatively short space of time – just perfect for the cruise ship tourist who has 5-7 hours to discover Lisbon. These tour pages only briefly describe the sights of Lisbon, to discover more please use the links in each section.
All cruise liners have to moor in suitably deep water and thankfully the docks of Lisbon are east of the main city, this allows cruise ship visitors the chance to view Lisbon from the Rio Tejo (Tagus River). Portugal’s extensive history has revolved around the voyages that originated in the harbours and docks that line Lisbon river front. Lisbon is on the north bank of the Rio Tejo, so for the best views stand on the starboard (left) side of the cruise liner when entering Lisbon. The first district to be viewed is Belem with the small white castle the Torre de Belem, then the discoveries monument. The cruise liner will pass below the Abril 25th suspension bridge which has many similarities to the Golden Gate Bridge. The large central square which opens out to the estuary front is the Praça do Comércio the old trading centre for Lisbon’s colonies.
The cruise ship will moor to the east of historic Lisbon (Baixa and Rossio) in a district called Alcântara. This district is on the main estuary ring road with numerous buses heading west to Baixa and Rossio. A single ticket cost €0.80 and can be purchased from the driver, before try to obtain small coins as bus drivers are unhappy with notes and will flatly refuse larger notes. The ring road has numerous taxis heading west and the journey cost approximately €3-4 taking about 5 minutes. For those wanting to stock up on cheap food or drink there is a medium sized Liddi’s along the main estuary ring road heading towards the historic town centre. Depending on the extract location of the mooring the Liddi can be within walking distance. Being a large multinational chain credit and debit cards are accepted from all foreign nationals. |
