Praca de Dom Pedro IV (Rossio), LisbonPraca de Dom Pedro IV (Rossio) is the central square of Lisbon and is part of the Baixa district of Lisbon. The square is famous for it's nauseating wave pattern stone paving, the main building at the end of the image is the National Theatre D. Maria II and to the left is the decorative Rossio train station.
The statue is a likeness of Dom Pedro IV but ledgend has it that the staue is that of Emperor Maximilian of Mexico, he was assassinated soon after completion of his statue so the sculpture switched orders and delivered this statue to Lisbon. The switch was unnoticed (or accepted) as both leaders were similar and provided a massive saving to all parties. Click here for the walking tour of the area.
