Alfama is Lisbon’s oldest district, a maze of of narrow streets, steep hills and traditions. The district originated around the castle's outer walls home to sailors, dock workers and the poor of the old city but out of all the squalor the beautiful sound of Fado music originated. The hap-hazardous buildings of the Alfama district almost touch at the roof level while old women gossip between balconies. Alfama is undergoing a massive regeneration program to restore many of the crumbling ancient dwellings and the area is again becoming trendy and fashionable. Alfama is a joy to wander as a tourist, lost for the majority of the time, but discovering true Lisbon all of the time.
