The Palácio Nacional da Pena (Feather Palace) in Sintra was designed by a charismatic Portuguese king who wanted his castle to be styled "as if it were part of an opera" and Pena Palace is his dream!

There are gargoyles, spiked walls, colourful towers and a spectacular view which overlooks from the Atlantic to Lisbon. Palácio Nacional da Pena was the location that the Portuguese royal family spent their last night before fleeing to Brazil. The Palácio Nacional da Pena is situated in one of Portugal’s national parks and the whole area is protected forest which has, due to the hills, has its own micro climate which is always a few degrees cooler than the rest of Lisbon.
